A dry gully is framed by shrubs in the fore- and middle-grounds and by bamboo and dry grasses on either bank. Perched on a branch, one of the magpies looks down and caws, as if trying to scare off the wild hare, while the other bird flutters in mid air. The hare turns to look up and raises its right paw in readiness to scamper off. The artist's signature and the date appear on the tree trunk.
