十六世紀時，佛朗機人（今葡萄牙人）曾在此建據點，後在屯門一帶被明朝軍隊擊敗，史稱屯門海戰。附近有鹽田遺址。
Tai O, on Lantau Island, has a history of salt production. During the 16th century, the Portuguese navy built fortifications here. Later they were defeated by the Ming Dynasty Imperial Navy at the Battle of
Tamao at Tuen Mun.
